ARCHIVED - Forest fire in Alicante
Alicante has become the latest province of Spain to suffer forest fires due to the extreme heat
A forest fire in La Vall d'Alcalà, in Alicante, has burnt down 1,900 square metres of pine forest just southeast of Alcoy, according to the Alicante Provincial Fire Brigade Consortium.
This is the latest in more than a dozen forest fires burning in Spain, with at least four of them being very serious and having claimed two lives already. More fires have led to fatalities in Portugal and around Europe, while estimates indicate that 510 people have already died in Spain as a result of the heatwave this July.
Thankfully, the Alicante fire was smaller than this, and there were no casualties or fatalities.
The fire broke out at around 9.30pm on Monday July 18 in Barranquet Piner, in La Vall d'Alcalà, a valley in the Marina Alta area which contains two villages – Alcalà de la Jovada and Beniaia.
Forest firefighters, as well as six regular firefighters from the Denia fire station and one non-commissioned officer, among others, were able to quell the flames and bring the fire under control by 10.30pm.
The fire was pronounced officially extinguished in the early hours of the morning.
Other areas of Spain are not so lucky, such as the Costa del Sol where the huge forest fire in Mijas, Malaga has been exacerbated by the hot weather.
