Food for thought: Águilas rolls out its solidarity wagon
A local organisation’s Christmas charity event is proving that generosity is always in season
The streets of Águilas were alive with goodwill (and a rather unique form of transportation) last weekend as the II Solidarity Wagon took its annual tour of the town.
The initiative, organised by the Brotherhood of Águilas and now in its second successful year, saw locals rolling up their sleeves and digging deep into their pantries for a good cause.
Starting at the Iglesia del Carmen church, the charity wagon, which was pulled along Juan Carlos I towards the Glorieta, served as a mobile donation station. Residents lined up to offer food supplies destined to help those most in need, proving once again that when it comes to solidarity, Águilas knows how to deliver.
The route concluded at the doors of Cáritas, where the collected goods were handed over to be distributed to the needy.
But the day’s efforts didn’t stop there. By the afternoon, the Brotherhood had swapped wheels for tunes, hosting a festive recital of Christmas carols in the Plaza de España. Their choir brought seasonal cheer to the crowd, which included notable guests such as the town’s Mayor, Mari Carmen Moreno, the Councillor for Culture, José Antonio Consentino, and Regional Deputy Juan Andrés Torres.
As far as charity drives go, this one truly pulled its weight – wheels and all!
