ARCHIVED - Five arrested for drug trafficking in Benidorm tourist zone
The arrests were made in what is coloquially known as the 'English area' of the Marina Baixa town in Alicante province

The opening of borders after months of movement restrictions, a return to normality with the arrival of international tourists and the reopening of many establishments in Benidorm have reportedly led to an increase in crime in the so-called English or tourist area of Benidorm.
And to combat the sale and consumption of drugs in popular leisure areas, police have stepped up preventative measures with static vehicle checks in and around the 'zona guiri', as the central area is known coloquially.
And this week, five people have been arrested for drug trafficking in separate incidents after police seized 580 grams of hashish and more than 5,500 euros in cash.
The first arrest was made during one of these police vehicle checks, carried out by members of the Prevention and Reaction Unit. During an inspection of the detainee's car, officers found a bundle of hashish hidden in the driver's door and 1,300 euros in a backpack. Given the quantity of drugs and amount of cash, the driver was arrested.
In a separate incident in the same area, a high-end vehicle being driven suspiciously alerted police in a marked car carrying out routine road checks. It soon became clear the driver was trying to avoid the police control before it sped off towards the AP-7 motorway exit.
Police gave chase and managed to intercept the car with four men inside. Once again, a search revealed 240 grams of hashish and 4,256 euros. All four were arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking.
The five male detainees, of Albanian, Spanish and Moroccan nationality and aged between 35 and 41 years old, will appear before the Court of Instruction of Benidorm.
