ARCHIVED - Fishermen rescue 13 migrants after spotting boat off the coast of Torrevieja
The patera (small boat) is the first to be intercepted off Costa Blanca shores in 2023
Thirteen migrants have been rescued by fishermen 19 nautical miles off the coast of Torrevieja.
The occupants, all men from Algeria, were aboard what the Red Cross has described as a 'precarious vessel' when they were spotted just after midday on Tuesday January 3.
The skipper of the fishing boat alerted Salvamento Marítimo and remained close to the patera until official rescuers on board the Salvamar Leo arrived.
All of the men were taken to Alicante Port where they were given socio-health care.
This is the first patera to be detected along the Valencian coast this year. In 2022, 42 migrant boats were intercepted with a total of 410 people on board, of which 16 were women and 52 were children.
Last year's figures were approximately half that of 2021 when 848 people aboard 67 boats were rescued, according to data from the Red Cross (Cruz Roja).
The PANGEA Agency in Orihuela is in charge of assisting migrants in social need, providing advisory services such as information on political asylum processes, and last year, the department saw its resources stretched by more than a third.
The PANGEA office assisted 782 migrants from 45 different nationalities in 2022, in particular Morocco, Ukraine and Algeria.
