ARCHIVED - First Delta Plus Covid cases detected in Spain
Five people have tested positive for the coronavirus variant in Spain
As the Delta Plus coronavirus variant sweeps across Britain, the first cases have been detected here in Spain, with five infections reported in Madrid on Saturday October 23. Believed to be up to 15% more infectious than the original Delta strain, AY.4.2, as it is officially known, already accounts for nearly 10% of all new cases in the UK.
According to the Minister of Health in Madrid, Enrique Ruiz Escudero, several other cases are being studied for the variant, and the authorities are examining the relationship between those infected and the United Kingdom to determine if they have recently travelled there.
There has been a slight rebound in coronavirus infections throughout Spain in the last week or so, but hospital pressure remains stable and is even decreasing in many areas, thanks in no small part to the fact that 88.3% of the population over the age of twelve has now been fully vaccinated.
For this reason, the region of Madrid has decided that children can now remove their masks while at recess outdoors at school, a measure that each autonomous community can decide on independently. On the whole, 81.7% of children aged between 12 and 19 are now double jabbed in Spain.
Mr Escudero stated that for the time being, the five confirmed cases of Delta Plus in Madrid “are anecdotal” since they can be counted on one hand; however, health authorities have called for “prudence” in light of the danger of the new strain.
