Fire near Puerto de Mazarrón forces homes to be evacuated this Friday
The blaze has spread from a rubbish dump to forest land

A large fire has broken out near Puerto de Mazarrón this Friday afternoon, July 18, sending a thick column of black smoke billowing into the sky and alarming residents and beachgoers as it spread from a rubbish dump into nearby forest land.
The blaze has forced emergency services to evacuate some homes and close off roads in the area as flames threaten residential zones.
According to police sources, the fire originated at the Ecoparque Cañada de Gallego, a waste disposal facility located next to the RM-332 road, between Bolnuevo and Puerto de Mazarrón.
Witnesses began alerting emergency services around midday after spotting flames and heavy smoke, which were visible from a considerable distance.
The emergency response involved multiple firefighting units under the Region of Murcia’s Infomur Plan, which coordinates efforts to combat forest fires.
Environmental agents, Local Police, Civil Protection teams, and terrestrial forestry brigades were all deployed, supported by helicopters carrying out aerial water drops to help contain the blaze.
The Ecoparque, where the fire started, has been the subject of local complaints. Residents claim the site has not been properly maintained for years.
Mazarrón Town Hall describes the facility as a selective waste collection point where residents can dispose of less common household items free of charge.
The fire’s proximity to homes has prompted precautionary evacuations, although no injuries have been reported at the time of writing. Authorities have also temporarily closed roads in the area to ensure public safety.
This incident follows two recent fires at neglected waste dumps in the Camposol urbanisation, also within the Mazarrón municipality. In those cases, residents similarly blamed the accumulation of dry vegetation and a lack of maintenance on surrounding plots of land.
While investigations into the cause of all these blazes are ongoing, authorities have not ruled out the possibility of deliberate acts of arson.
At the same time, a major wildfire is threatening the Spanish capital of Madrid this Friday.
