Fire in Molina de Segura building leaves 9 injured
Three children suffered smoke inhalation in the Murcia apartment block blaze
Tragedy struck the Murcia municipality of Molina de Segura on the evening of Monday March 4 when a devastating fire broke out on the ground floor of a seven-storey building, leaving nine people hospitalised, including three children.
The blaze prompted a massive response from the emergency services, with both Local Police and firefighters from the Fire Extinction and Rescue Consortium of the Region of Murcia, along with multiple ambulances and medical personnel, rushing to the scene.
According to reports, the fire started at approximately 7.20pm, with witnesses claiming that at least 10 people were trapped on a terrace. Thankfully, all those affected were safely evacuated and received medical attention within 36 minutes.
Seven people were transferred to nearby healthcare facilities, including a 56-year-old woman taken to Morales Meseguer hospital, three other women in their 40s, a 7-year-old boy and two girls aged 6 and 16 months, who were taken to Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital. A 72-year-old man and a 54-year-old woman were treated at the scene of the fire.
While the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, initial investigations point towards an overload in a socket being responsible for the inferno. It is understood that three people have been relocated to a hotel due to their home being uninhabitable at present.
This latest incident comes on the heels of two previous fatal fires in the last 15 days. Last week, a devastating blaze in Valencia claimed ten lives and left many others injured, while earlier this week, a grandmother, her son and her grandson perished in another deadly fire in the Alicante town of Villajoyosa.
In the second case, it’s understood that once again an overloaded socket caught fire in the living room of the apartment, located very close to Benidorm.
