ARCHIVED - Fines for flouting Covid measures down in the Valencia region
The number of fines issued at the weekend was down 13 per cent on the previous week in the provinces of Alicante, Valencia and Castellon.
A total of 1,111 fines for failing to comply with anti-Covid measures were issued over the weekend in the Valencia region - the last with a night curfew still in place - which represents a significant drop compared to seven days earlier, according to the National Police.
On Friday night into Saturday morning, June 5, 589 sanctions for fines were issued, compared to 574 last weekend, and on Saturday night into Sunday morning, there were 522, down on the 707 imposed seven days earlier.
The main issues police had to contend with was non-compliance with the night curfew and mask wearing.
Government delegate in the Valencian Community, Gloria Calero, said there were no major problems to report, and that the figures are "encouraging" ahead of a lifting of the 1am to 6am curfew and an extension of bar, restaurant and discotheque opening hours across the region.
However, Calero insisted that, despite the easing of restrictions and the "unquestionable data in regard to the vaccination campaign", it is "crucial that we remain cautious to move towards normality".
"We must act with prudence and responsibility, because advancing in the de-escalation does not mean that the risk of outbreaks has disappeared. Through our behavior we can save lives, protect our own and recover as a country," she added.
