ARCHIVED - Female soldier dies in tragic accident during exercise in Santa Pola on the Costa Blanca
The female soldier was killed during an Army exercise in Santa Pola, Alicante province.
Artillery Sergeant Débora Grau, 33-years-old, was fatally injured in a freak accident while connecting an artillery shell to a lorry during a practice exercise in Santa Pola in the comarca of Baix Vinalopó of the Alicante province, on Friday, May 14, the Army has confirmed on its Twitter account.
She was immediately transferred to Alicante General Hospital, but died around 8.30pm the same evening.
The deceased belonged to the Coast Artillary Regiment No 4, which is based in Cadiz's Camposoto barracks in San Fernando and had been deployed to the Alicante town.

Paying tribute to the 33-year-old, whose funeral service was held at Bótoa barracks in Badajoz, where she was from, on Sunday, May 16, the Military of Defense said: "We have given our last farewell to Sergeant Debora Grau Serra. Her comrades of the Artillery Costa nº4 Rgt have carried her on their shoulders and have paid her a heartfelt tribute.
"We offer all our support in these hard moments to her family and colleagues. She gave her life for Spain".
Messages of support and tributes to Sgt Grau have also been posted on social media by the female Badajoz Sports Club, of which she was a member, and the Extremadura Basketball Federation having been a coach for the Badajoz Women's Basketball and the Los Maristas teams.
