ARCHIVED - Father and young daughters saved from drowning at Costa Blanca beach
The family was dragged out to sea by strong currents at El Campello's Carrer la Mar beach in Alicante province
Huge praise has been heaped on lifeguards in El Campello whose "quick actions" prevented a tragedy at Carrer la Mar beach after a father and two young daughters were dragged out to sea by strong currents.
The stretch of beach at number 33 of the promenade has mandatory red flags warning of the existence of sea currents alerting beachgoers to the danger, and on Monday afternoon the Lifeguard and Rescue team had also raised a yellow flag.
However, despite the warnings, the lifeguard team spotted a man and two girls entering the water and immediately approached them, telling them to get out of the sea. But the dad and daughters were unable to get to the shoreline and were rapidly being swept further away.
Instinctively, two of the lifeguards jumped into the water and managed to drag the two sisters to safety, and finally, after a "lengthy period hindered by the heavy swell", reached the children's father and rescued him, too with the support of jet skis.
The family was checked over by a medical team at the scene, and were all said to be "in good condition", according to El Campello's deputy Mayor, Julio Oca, although the father was showing early signs of hypothermia and passive warming techniques were carried out. They were all then taken to a nearby hospital.
"We would like to congratulate our Rescue and Lifeguard team who, in their first relevant intervention since the service began last Saturday April 9, prevented the possible drowning of a family dragged by the sea currents," praised the deputy mayor.
