ARCHIVED - Farmers in Spain face ruin due to rising costs
Basic food products for livestock in Spain have skyrocketed this year

Spanish dairy farmers are on the verge of ruin due to an “unsustainable situation” caused by the skyrocketing prices of cereals and other food products, combined with the dwindling costs of milk and meat.
Activists Agromuralla claim that dairy plants have failed to renegotiate their milk contracts upwards despite the soaring costs, and the Spanish livestock sector throughout Spain has planned a series of marches and demonstrations in November to highlight the unworkable situation.
Cattle aren’t the only problem, with sheep, goat and pig farmers reporting that prices have been falling drastically for months to around one euro per live kilo. Poultry and rabbit farms have also felt the effect, while Iberian pig farmers in Lonja de Salamanca and Extremadura are rejoicing as the price of their livestock is on the rise.
Due largely to their scarcity in this country, the price for lambs has also experienced a resurgence, costing anywhere between 18 and 32 euros per kilo in the last week. In cattle, rising costs are resulting in many younger animals being sent to the slaughterhouse, which could have long-lasting effects on the herd.
