Expat cyclist seriously injured in Alicante crash
The 67-year-old was hit by a car in the Costa Blanca town of Formentera del Segura
A 67-year-old foreign national sustained severe injuries in a road collision involving a car and his bicycle at the junction of the Formentera del Segura urbanisation with CV-9032 and Daya Vieja.
The victim was airlifted to Alicante's Doctor Balmis Hospital via medical helicopter, according to the Emergency Coordination Centre of the Generalitat. First responders dispatched a Basic Life Support ambulance to the site to treat the wounded individual.
The incident took place at around 10.15am at the ‘Patatas Beltrán’ crossroads, which has become known as something of an accident black spot. According to reports, the driver appears to have struck the cyclist, but this has not yet been proven and an investigation is ongoing.
Formentera del Segura on the Costa Blanca is a popular area for expats from the UK to settle, and is located just a 15 minute drive from the charming town of Guardamar.
This incident is the latest in a series of serious accidents that have occurred at the same location, making it a growing concern for local residents. The area is commonly used by people from San Fulgencio, Los Palacios and Rojales seeking to avoid the nearby CV-860 roundabout, and many residents also use bicycles for short trips or leisure activities.
