Europe's most disappointing tourist experiences, and what Spain's Siam Park tells us
A look at Europe’s top tourist letdowns with a closer eye on Spain’s famous water park
When you think of Spain’s tourist attractions, a few dazzling images spring to mind. But even the best-known destinations can sometimes leave visitors feeling underwhelmed. According to a recent report from Radical Storage, which analysed over 95,000 traveller reviews, some of Europe’s major hot spots have faced their fair share of criticism and Spain’s own Siam Park on Tenerife surprisingly features high on the list.Siam Park may be Europe’s largest and one of its most acclaimed water parks, but nearly a third of visitors express disappointment, citing issues like overcrowding, long queues, and a less-than-welcoming attitude from some staff. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is another frequent complaint. These factors have tainted the experience for many, despite the park’s stunning slides and beautiful theming.
Elsewhere, Britain’s Alton Towers tops the disappointment charts with grumbles about expensive tickets and long waits, while Budapest’s historic Széchenyi Baths struggle with overcrowding and maintenance problems. Lisbon’s popular Time Out Market and Rome’s famous Trevi Fountain also make appearances on the list, with crowds and high prices limiting enjoyment for many visitors.
These findings challenge the idealised image of Europe’s iconic destinations and highlight a growing need to manage tourism pressures better. If you’re planning your next trip, it might be worth seeking out less crowded alternatives or visiting these spots during quieter times to capture that magical experience unspoiled by over-tourism.
After all, sometimes the best memories come from the places off the beaten path.
