ARCHIVED - Entire hotel sector in Alicante open for business this summer
A surge in bookings has led to the reopening of hotels in Alicante on the Costa Blanca.
The lifting of restrictions and a surge in reservations has led to the reopening of hotels across Alicante, with almost 100 per cent taking bookings from July and all expected to open their doors in August.
According to the latest data compiled by the Valencian Tourism Board, 40 of the 41 establishments in Alicante are already in operation, with the reopening of the last of the major hotels, the four-star Gran Sol, affiliated by Meliá, undergoing the final stages of refurbishment before taking guests from August 1.
The hotels began a gradual reopening earlier this month, "encouraged by the gradual increase in bookings", following a challenging May in which there was a combined average occupancy of just 43.54 per cent, half the 86.24 per cent recorded in the same month of 2019 prior to the pandemic.
All in all, the forecasts so far confirm a recovery trend, according to tourism experts, thanks to the arrival of domestic visitors and the resumption of flights from some European countries.
Though the hotel sector is well aware that the success of the summer is reliant on the reactivation of the British market.
Last week's news that Spain mainland remains on the UK safe travel amber list will have come as a huge blow to the tourism industry on the Costa Blanca, which is reliant on British tourists.
In the meantime, the tourism sector has been given a boost with the arrival of the first cruise ship which docked in Alicante on Saturday, June 26, after 15 months of paralysis in the sector.
