Elderly Brit swindled out of life savings by Alicante caregiver
The 91-year-was robbed of more than 50k by a carer at his home in Rojales
An elderly British man enjoying his retirement in the quiet Vega Baja town of Rojales has had his bank accounts cleared out and his life savings robbed by a carer he welcomed into his home to look after him in his twilight years. Thankfully, the Alicante Guardia Civil have arrested the woman accused of defrauding more than 50,000 euros from the 91-year-old.
The elderly victim heard alarm bells when he received notifications that his account balance was running low. When he began missing bill payment dates and had to resort to asking his son for money to cover his basic living costs, the Briton went to the Police. At the time, he told them that he should have at least 50k in his savings account.
Officers from the Almoradí station launched an investigation, and immediately noticed a number of large withdrawals and other suspicious payments that the victim swore he never made. Police quickly zeroed in on the man’s last caregiver, who had worked in his house for a year and a half as a home help.
They found that during that time, the alleged perpetrator had been using the British pensioner’s card to pay in all kinds of shops, leisure establishments and casinos, spending a whopping 53,753 euros of his life savings over the 18-month period.
Officers caught up to her in Formentera del Segura on June 10 and she was arrested for fraud.
The accused scam artist is a 64-year-old Spaniard with an extensive criminal history. She was granted bail by a court in Torrevieja last week until a final sentence is handed down.
