ARCHIVED - Elche cancels spectacular annual firework celebrations amid Covid concerns
Nit de l'Albà festival in Elche Baix Vinalopo comarca, Alicante province, cancelled due to pandemic, but other activities are planned.
Elche has cancelled its annual Nit de l'Albà firework display and all other mass events which make up the August festivities, but plans to offer small-scale alternatives.
"We understand that, even this year, the conditions are not given to encourage thousands to gather in a tradition that attracts many people, it's a risk we cannot take," says Elche mayor, Carlos Gonzalez.
The council and festival organisers met this week, and decided the best option is to cancel Nit de l'Albà, and stage a bigger and better event in 2022, as a result of the current health situation with infections rising across Alicante province.
"At the meeting, we analysed the socio-sanitary situation in the municipality and the implications of holding the patron saint of Elche festivities this year. The agreement that we have made is totally influenced by the current situation, and we consider that the most sensible action is to once gain, not hold the festivities," added the mayor.
As a result, there will be no Nit de l'Albà firework display or Moors and Christians parades and festivities, in fact "no mass events that cannot be controlled".
Instead, a program of cultural and music events is planned, "with all necessary security measures" in place, which is expected to be announced over the next few days.
Nit de l'Albà is a pyrotechnic show normally held in the second week of August in honour of the patron saint of Elche, and consists of more than 2,000 kilos of gunpowder and 90,000 fireworks, including the traditional great Palm of the Virgin rocket, which reaches heights of 300 metres.
