Elche Crevillente natural park registers 33,500 birds - one of the largest number ever recorded
El Hondo de Elche Crevillente, Alicante province, is currently home to a record 46 species of aquatic birds

El Hondo de Elche Crevillente has already recorded 46 species of water birds, the highest figure since records have been kept of populations that spend the winter in the natural park.
The number of specimens identified has reached 33,555, which is the third highest figure on record.
Among the various species identified, the populations of the common shoveler (Spatula clypeata) stand out, with 12,968 specimens counted, and 7,100 flamingos currently resident at the park.
In addition, there has been a significant increase in the population of aquatic invertebrates, a bio-indicator of water quality.
The increased presence of birdlife is apparently the result of several interventions carried out by the Regional Ministry of Ecological Transition in the management of the natural area.
One of these was aimed at reducing the overpopulation of fish, in particular carp, which feed on submerged vegetation and aquatic invertebrates that serve as food for most waterfowl.
Reservoirs through which the fish were arriving, were emptied to achieve this goal in collaboration with the Levante Irrigation Community for water management. In addition, an artisanal fishing project has been set up to catch carp by the ANSE association and the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry of Ecological Transition.
El Hondo de Elche Crevillente Natural Park is the second most important wetland in the Valencia Region for populations of aquatic birds, after the Albufera of Valencia, and during the wintering season, it concentrates the largest populations of water birds (anatidae) in the south of Alicante.
