El Tintero kiosk reincarnated: the site of the Torrevieja beach bar will be turned into a viewing point
The famous Costa Blanca kiosk was torn down by the coastal authorities in November much to the outrage of locals
Two weeks ago, the iconic El Tintero beachside bar looked proudly over Torrevieja’s seafront, where it had stood for more than 80 years. Now, all that remains in its place is a concrete outcropping surrounded by unsightly construction fencing.
On November 23, the coastal authorities (Costas) completely demolished the kiosk, which began life generations ago as a place to dye fishing gear. Over the years, El Tintero transformed in one of the Costa Blanca’s best-known bar-restaurants, but last month the decision was made to tear it down, since it stands on public land.
Now, the Costas have revealed they plan to reopen this unique parcel of land as a public viewpoint. Repairs have to be made to the foundations, which were damaged during the demolition, but all going well, the lookout point should be up and running before Christmas.
Although Torrevieja City Council joined the battle to prevent El Tintero from being torn down, even going so far as commissioning an external study to have the kiosk declared an Asset of Local Relevance, it is all for the space now being used as a new viewpoint.
The council has, however, gone ahead with ordering the study and it’s hoped that this, together with a report commissioned by El Tintero’s owners, the Chazarra family, might at least be enough to save the original breakwater and picnic area under the kiosk.
It’s unlikely to be plain sailing though, since the Costa’s have waded in with the opinion that the structure on which El Tintero used to stand could be contributing to the erosion of Cura beach, something which Torrevieja mayor Eduardo Dolón strenuously disputes.
Outside of the political sphere, opinions are still divided over the sudden removal of the legendary El Tintero. While many residents are pleased that the breathtaking site will at least be put to good use, most are still shocked and saddened that this unique piece of the region’s historic identity has been so unceremoniously destroyed.
