ARCHIVED - Drunk driver rams several parked cars and smashes into bar terrace in Torrevieja
The crash happened just meters from the Guardia Civil barracks in the Vega Baja town
A drunk driver smashed into several parked cars before mounting the pavement and ploughing into a bar terrace in Torrevieja on Monday evening, January 31.
Fortunately, the Safari Lounge in Calle La Loma was closed at the time and nobody was hurt, but there was substantial damage caused to the terrace and furniture. Police were quickly on the scene, with the HQ just metres away, and the driver tested positive for alcohol.
According to Torrevieja Emergencias, the motorist lost control of his vehicle and ploughed into several parked cars along calles La Loma and Patricio, before smashing into tables and chairs outside the local bar at around 7pm.
The driver was charged with drink driving and an offence against public safety.
In the last decade, there have been six traffic accidents in Torrevieja town centre in which vehicles have crashed into bar, cafe or restaurant terraces.
Fortunately, nobody has been seriously injured, although concerns have been raised about the "vulnerability" of hotel and catering establishments with tables and chairs placed so close to the roadside.
