Drunk Belgian woman crashed while driving in the wrong direction along Torrevieja highway
The 49-year-old was three times over the limit when arrested just outside the Costa Blanca city
A Belgian woman was arrested on the outskirts of Torrevieja in December when she crashed her car after travelling for some distance in the wrong direction along the N-332 dual carriageway.
Concerned motorists contacted the Guardia Civil on the night of December 15 to notify them of a car driving very erratically. The 49-year-old motorist reportedly took the wrong exit onto the busy road with the intention of travelling into Torrevieja city centre and ended up driving 400 metres in the opposite direction to the rest of the traffic.
After much swerving and ducking in and out of other cars, she crashed into a parked vehicle. Several witnesses detained the woman until police could arrive on the scene. The Belgian driver was found to be three times over the legal limit when she was breathalysed.
Police are now investigating the woman, who has a string of previous road safety offences, one for the crime of reckless driving and another for driving under the influence of alcohol.
According to Spanish law, this driver could now face between 6 months and 2 years behind bars and a ban from driving of up to 6 years.
