ARCHIVED - Dozens of shelters for stray cat colonies to be erected across Torrevieja
The aim of the initiative in the Vega Baja town, Alicante province, is to improve hygiene and the protection of feral felines
Torrevieja's Department of Animal Protection plans to place 28 cat shelters across the municipality, specifically in areas popular with feral feline colonies.
The project aimed at improving the hygiene and protection of street cat colonies in Torrevieja is a joint initiative in partnership with associations Alma de Gato, Proyecto CES and Animalistas Torrevieja, and is part of a wider council programme for the capture, sterilisation, release and return of stray cats.
"The installation of these 28 kennels will improve the appearance of the meeting points for the colonies, their feeding, health control and the management of the health of the stray cats, with the aim of also guaranteeing their welfare and population control as much as possible. In short, a municipal action that aims to improve the coexistence of cat colonies in the urban environment," explained the local authority.
As part of its Project CES campaign to control feral cat populations in San Fulgencio, also in the Vega Baja, Alicante, the town council appealed to members of hte public to help locate colonies of street felines. Once located, the animals will be captured using cage-traps and neutered before being released back into their colonies.
