ARCHIVED - Dozens of international residents attend Orihuela Costa election seminar
The Alicante seminars aim to provide detailed information for expats voting in the municipal elections

The information sessions held throughout Alicante province have so far attracted large crowds since, in addition to Spanish citizens of legal age, citizens of the European Union and those from countries that have signed a reciprocity agreement with Spain will be able to vote.
Although UK expats no longer automatically qualify to vote in municipal elections having lost EU Citizen status after Brexit, they can still vote in local elections because such an agreement is indeed in place, which recognises the right of British citizens residing in Spain to vote and to stand as a candidate.
However, for international residents, the process is a little more complicated than just turning up to the polls on election day. People who want to exercise their right to vote must register their intention to do so before the established deadline, which is January 30 next year for European citizens.
Applications for enrolment on the Electoral Census for citizens of countries with an agreement, including the UK, may be made from 1 December 2022 to 15 January 2023.
It’s also important to note that non-EU citizens from countries with a reciprocal agreement must register to vote every time they wish to exercise their right to vote in municipal elections.
Several other information sessions for international voters will be held throughout Alicante in the coming weeks, full details of which can be found here.
Anyone wishing to register their intention to vote must do so at the municipal registry office, where other details of the procedure can also be found. In addition, further information is available on the dedicated Alicante election website.
