Don't rely on armbands or floats to keep children safe in the water
CE marking mandatory across EU, Andalucía's Regional Government urges families to check labels and remember constant supervision is essential
Summer is here, and with it comes the familiar sight of children in armbands, floats, and life jackets at beaches, pools, and aquatic centres across Spain. But safety experts are reminding families that these products are support devices only, and in no case do they replace constant adult supervision or guarantee the prevention of drowning. Before purchasing any flotation aid, it is essential to check that the product bears the CE (European Conformity) marking, which is mandatory for sale throughout the European Union. This marking certifies that the manufacturer has assessed the product and verified it meets safety, health, and environmental protection requirements.
The labeling must be presented, at least, in Spanish and include clear information about the manufacturer, safety warnings, and instructions for use. Among the aspects that must be clearly displayed is the need to fully inflate all air chambers before use, as well as the explicit warning that the product does not protect against the risk of drowning.
For armbands specifically, the labeling must specify that they should be placed correctly only on the upper arms. The product must also clearly indicate the age and weight range for which it is designed, preventing inappropriate use that could compromise safety.
The information leaflet must include detailed instructions on inflation, deflation, valve closure, and proper placement, since "incorrect use can increase the risk of accidents."
Now, the Andalusian Regional Government has issued a particularly strong warning about this. The General Directorate of Consumer Affairs of Andalucía has informed families about the importance of exercising extreme caution when purchasing and using children's flotation aids, such as armbands, floats, life jackets, inflatable mattresses, and aquatic seats.
"These items are designed as support devices in the water, but in no case do they replace constant adult supervision nor do they, on their own, guarantee the prevention of drowning," the regional government stated.
The Consumer Affairs department advises purchasing these products only from reputable establishments, avoiding items without proper labeling, manufacturer identification, or from sales channels that do not offer sufficient guarantees. "If a consumer detects an item they consider potentially unsafe, they can report it to the authorities by filing the appropriate complaint."
When a product presents safety risks, the monitoring system is activated through the Consumer Product Alert Network and the European Safety Gate system, which allows information to be shared quickly between regional, national, and European administrations to remove dangerous products from the market.
"Prevention remains the best tool for enjoying the summer safely, especially when it comes to protecting children in aquatic environments," the Consumer Affairs department insists.
So before you head to the beach or pool this summer, check the CE marking, read the instructions, and never forget that nothing replaces watching your child in the water.
