ARCHIVED - Disorientated eagle rescued from busy town centre street by police in Aspe, Alicante
The bird of prey was sitting in the middle of the road in Aspe town centre
An impressive eagle has been saved from possible death after becoming disorientated in Aspe town centre where it wandered the streets before sitting in the middle of the road.
The raptor didn't appear to be in any hurry to move on, and Aspe Local Police officers were quickly able to capture the bird in Calle Sevilla, when they noticed it had been ringed.
Once back at the station, an online check of the identity ring was carried out and the owner was soon located and reunited with the eagle, once all of the necessary paperwork was found to be in order.
The Harris eagle is a sociable bird and typically lives in a family group similar to wolf packs, even hunting together and sharing the responsibility of raising chicks.
Native to central and southern North America, this raptor's habitat is usually found in trees or cliffs with clutches of one to 6 eggs.
Rabbits, pigeons, rats and squirrels are their main food source, although they also hunt reptiles.
This species is a highly sought-after bird by falconers and its intelligence has made it a favourite for low-flying hunting. In addition, its ability to adapt to new environments has led to this bird of prey being bred in captivity all over the world.
