ARCHIVED - Discarded toilet wipes make unwelcome return to riverbed in the Marina Alta
Ecologists in Action have lodged a formal complaint over the "reappearance of wipes" in the Gorgos river in Javea, Alicante province
Wet wipes flushed down the toilet don't break down like loo roll, and in heavy rain can be flushed from the sewerage system through overflows and end up clogging up riverbeds and banks.
According to Ecologists in Action Marina Alta, this is exactly what is happening in Javea, where they have lodged a formal complaint with the Town Hall over the "reappearance" of wet wipes littering the Gorgos riverbed.
Mounds of wipes have been spotted in stretches of the riverbed that runs past McDonalds restaurant and the Institute of Secondary Education (IES), as well as on the shore of II Muntanyar beach, close to sewer traps than run alongside the riverbed.
The sightings have been reported to the local authority and environmental authorities amid fears the situation will only be exacerbated by the heavy rainfall expected in Javea and the rest of Alicante coast on Friday October 22, which will place added strain on the sewerage system.
