The blaze broke out in the Cala Llebeig area of Tuelada in the Marina Alta reigon of Alicante province at the weekend

A forest fire raged in Alicante's Tuelada on Saturday April 29, forcing the evacuation of at least 120 people in the Cala Llebeig area. It was only deemed fully extinguished at 10.30am this morning, Monday May 1.

The fire, which started at around 7.30am, razed 18 hectares of vegetation as temperatures soared amid a heatwave and the driest April in decades. Smoke billowing from the mountainside could be seen for several kilometres as firefighters battled the flames.

According to the Valencia government's emergency service, around 100 ground resources were required to eventually secure the perimeter of the fire, as well as water-bombing aircraft.

On Saturday afternoon, situation 1 of the Special Plan against Forest Fires (PEIF) was established, and the Guardia Civil evacuated residents living in homes nearby.

And overnight into Sunday morning, surveillance drones repeatedly flew over the area to detect hot spots to prevent any new ignitions.

The regional secretary for Security and Emergencies, José María Ángel, visited the scene on Sunday afternoon as firefighters remained in the area to safeguard against further outbreaks. Fire crews finally pulled out of the area at 10.30am on Monday May 1.

Last week, an old building taken over by squatters in Orihuela was gutted in a fire, and wildfires engulfed the Sierra de Mijas in Malaga.
