ARCHIVED - Delta variant accounts for half of Covid cases in Valencia region
The Delta (or Indian) variant is behind 50 per cent of new Covid cases in the region's three provinces, including Alicante.
President of the Valencia region, Ximo Puig, has confirmed the Delta variant now accounts for half of the new diagnosis as cases continue to soar with 1,970 positives confirmed on Monday.
This paints a slightly more worrying picture to that of the country as a whole, where the variant is spreading fast, but accounts for around 10 per cent of cases in some regions, while the British or Kent variant, still accounts for the majority of cases.
Some scientists have warned that low vaccination levels (compared to the UK), a relaxation of restrictions and the reopening of nightlife venues have increased the contagion of the Delta variant, though certain anti-Covid measures have been extended in the Valencia region until July 15.
Speaking following a summit between the Valencia region and Balearic Islands, Puig expressed the government's "great concern" over the data, and said decisions will be made with regard to restrictions "depending on how the pandemic evolves".
"This is a very complex virus, and we must be more prudent that ever, because many lives have been saved, but there is still danger," added Puig.
