ARCHIVED - Dead eight ton whale washes ashore beach in Elche
The carcass was discovered on El Altet beach in the Baix Vinalopo area of Alicante province
The body of an eight ton whale in an advanced state of decomposition washed ashore El Altet beach in Elche on Thursday morning.
The council’s beach cleaning team was quickly on the scene to remove the carcass, which it is believed had been “dragged to the coast of Elche by the sea currents”.
The local authority notified the Guardia Civil, who in turn contacted the Oceanographic Institute of Elche to carry out analysis of the beached whale and try to determine how the aquatic mammal died.

“Once the necessary permits have been obtained, the whale carcass will be delivered to an authorised manager of dead animals,” explained Elche Council.
Elsewhere in the Valencia region, conservationists, police and volunteers managed to guide an 18-metre long, 50 ton finback whale safely back out to sea after it became trapped for several hours in a Valencia port.
