ARCHIVED - Covid incidence rate climbs in Orihuela and Torrevieja
Worrying rise in 14-day cumulative incidence in the Vega Baja, Alicante province
As infections continue to rebound and pressure on hospitals mounts in the Valencia region, two Alicante province health departments in particular have experienced a surge in new cases, which has led to a significant rise in the cumulative incidence.
On Sunday, August 1, Orihuela Health Department confirmed 429 new diagnosis, which has seen the 14-day cumulative incidence rate leap to 438 cases per 100,000 inhabitants - up 177 points on the 261 confirmed on July 27.
A sharp rise in infections was also registered by the Torrevieja Health Department, which revealed 388 new cases on Sunday, meaning the incidence rate has reached 445 cases per 100,000, an increase of 133 points in six days.
According to the latest update by Spain's Ministry of Health (as of July 31), the national average cumulative rate is 687, and the Valencia region 575. But while Torrevieja and Orihuela remain below these two figures, the rise is still concerning as pressure continues to mount on hospitals in the region with an upturn in admissions.
In the last month, hospital admissions have increased by 356 per cent, from 127 patients at the beginning of July, to almost 700 Covid patients on wards by the 31st.
And it's not just normal ward admissions which have soared, the number of the critical patients in intensive care has also grown by more than 500 per cent during the same period, from 17 people to 107.
Sadly, 46 Covid-related deaths were also reported in July, more than one every day, but thankfully lower than the dozens reported daily prior to the roll out of the vaccination campaign.
In a bid to accelerate immunisation across the Valencia region, the Ministry of Health plans to complete the vaccination of young people this month with an additional 580,000 doses of vaccine.
