ARCHIVED - Couple arrested over distraction burglaries at the homes of elderly in Alicante
The pair targeted their victims before using a number of techniques to gain access to the properties in Alicante on the Costa Blanca
National Police in Alicante have arrested a couple in their thirties in connection with at least six distraction burglaries at the homes of elderly victims across the city.
The man and woman, who have been arrested more than 70 times between them for similar offences, are believed to be part of a “family clan” which specialises in stealing money and jewellery from elderly homeowners, gaining access by claiming to have a message from a relative, requesting a glass of water or pretending to be pregnant.
According to officers from Alicante’s Economic Crime Group, the Spanish couple moved to the city several months ago, when the crime spree began, with all victims reporting similar ‘modus operandi’.
An investigation has since revealed the detainees did not choose their victims at random, but instead loitered around banks and supermarkets before following them, particularly elderly women, home.
Once at the victim’s property, one of the suspects would gain entry, leaving the front door open so that the accomplice could enter and search for items to steal.
On one occasion, a bank book was taken and more than 18,000 euros was withdrawn, leaving the account empty.
Stolen jewellery was quickly sold on, some of which was recovered during searches of the detainees homes. The pair have both appeared before the Court of Instruction in Alicante, and been remanded in custody while investigators continue their efforts to locate further possible victims.
