ARCHIVED - Costa Blanca town fines beachgoers for bagging spots on the sand with brollies
Cullera in Valencia wants to put an end to 'umbrella wars' with 3,000 euro fines
A seaside resort in Valencia is cracking down on the traditional summer beach menace of 'spot saving' and is fining sunseekers who use parasols and other personal belongings to save spots on the sand up to 3,000 euros.
The early morning ritual of rushing to the beach to secure the best possible position isn't exclusive to Cullera, but the Town Hall is determined to put an end to the annual 'umbrella wars' with hefty fines.

Instead of enjoying an extra hour or two in bed, beachgoers reportedly dash to Cullera coastline at 8am when the beach is opened to the public, and start 'seat-saving'.
So the town council has published a municipal notice clearly stating that "individuals are forbidden from occupying areas between the platform of the Accessible Beach Points and the sea, as this is an area reserved for bathing for people with reduced mobility". It also warns that "private elements that are installed before 8am or in the concession or accessible beach area" will be considered as "non-compliance" and can lead to fines ranging from 750 to 3,000 euros.
Cullera Town Hall first banned spot-saving in 2017.
