ARCHIVED - Colombian fugitive arrested over the fatal stabbing of a 96-year-old man at his home in Javea
The suspect was hired by the victim to clean his villa pool in the Marina Alta town, Alicante province
A Colombian wanted in his home country for drug trafficking has been arrested and jailed without bail over the fatal stabbing of a 96-year-old man at his home in Javea just days before Christmas last year.
The 58-year-old was hired by the victim five years ago to clean and maintain his swimming pool.
According to the Guardia Civil, the elderly Spanish man "surprised" the former employee as he was attempting to rob his home on December 20 2021, prompting a vicious knife attack.
The body of the elderly Spanish man was discovered by family members and a four-month police investigation ensued, culminating in the arrest of the detained - who is subject to a search warrant in Colombia - in the nearby town of Benitatxell.
"It is believed that the detainee knew that there was cash in the house and he tried to steal it as part of his 'Christmas holiday' expenses," say police sources, adding that the deceased had interrupted him as he was trying to flee with a laptop.
The investigation has been carried out by the Homicide unit of the Guardia Civil's Judicial Police Unit and a judge in Denia ordered that the detainee be imprisoned without bail accused of alleged murder and robbery with violence and intimidation.
