ARCHIVED - Christmas arrives in Orihuela with the switch-on of lights and unveiling of nativity scenes
The festive lights will be turned on in Orihuela Costa on December 1 and the following evening in the town centre
The clock is ticking for the much-anticipated turning on of the Christmas lights in Orihuela, along with the inauguration of the municipal nativity scenes.
The traditional festive switch-on will take place at Orihuela Costa Town Hall at 6pm this evening (December 1) with typical Christmas recitals by the Coro de Voces Ginés Pérez de la Parra, and a dance show performed by members of the Municipal Sports School.
In addition, the municipal nativity scene which has pride of place at the Security and Emergency Centre, Playa Flamenca, will be inaugurated.
"This year, we wanted the illumination and the nativity scenes to be enjoyed during the long weekend, when, especially on the coast, we receive many tourists," said Councillor for Festivities, Antonio Sánchez.
On Friday December 2, Orihuela town centre streets will be lit up during a special event in Calle San Pascual at 7pm. The nativity installed in Plaza Nueva, and the Neapolitan Nativity scene from the Pedrera-Martínez Collection located in the cloister of the Episcopal Palace, will also be opened.
The big switch-on also provides the perfect opportunity for the winner of the 15th Christmas Story Competition, Doha El Khayati, from CEIP Andrés Manjón school, to read her winning entry, 'A star for Olivia'.
And there will be music from the Ginés Pérez de la Parra Choir and Orihuela Professional Music Conservatory, in addition to a ballet performance by the Ana Belén Academy.
After the event, there will be a parade to the Episcopal Palace accompanied by music.
The Councillor for Festivities stressed that, this year, Christmas lighting will be extended to other main streets in the town centre, such as the Andenes and the Gabriel Miró roundabout.
"We hope that in this way, the areas with a concentration of shops and catering businesses will have an added attraction and that these streets will be filled with people."
