ARCHIVED - Cases and admissions continue to rise: Valencia update October 22
239 new infections and three deaths in the Valencia region, including Alicante province
New cases of Covid in the Valencia region once again exceed recoveries as hospital admissions continued to rise this week and the 14-day cumulative incidence rate has reached 40 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
This is in stark contract to a week ago, when the number of new diagnoses fell by more than 50% in five days, and the incidence rate slid to 31.83 cases.
The week didn't get off to a great start, with 509 cases reported over the weekend on Monday October 18, but regional president, Ximo Puig, insists the region "is not on the verge of a sixth wave" thanks especially to "the great shield of vaccines".
Indeed, 4,024,892 are now fully vaccinated against Covid, with a similar number of people having had at least one jab, and a further 40,000 third booster vaccines have been administered. However, the last seven days appear to have bucked the positive trajectory on Covid data of the last few weeks, and all eyes will be on the data following the weekend ahead.
New cases
A further 239 new cases have been reported over the weekend, down from 509 on Monday October 18, but up from 180 on Friday October 15, bringing the total number of positives since the beginning of the pandemic to 513,440. By province: 93 in Castellón (53,920 in total); 80 in Alicante (188,383) and 66 in Valencia (271,136).
Recoveries
125 people have recovered from Covid since the last update, meaning that to date, 514,835 people in the Valencian region have overcome the virus. By province: 54,009 in Castellón; 188,272 in Alicante; and 272,498 in Valencia.
Hospitalisations
There are currently 191 people admitted to hospitals in the three provinces, up from 175 on Monday, 52 of whom are being treated in ICUs (seven more than at the beginning of the week): 67 in the province of Castellón, 13 in ICU; 73 in the province of Alicante, 28 in ICU; and 51 in the province of Valencia, 11 of them in ICU.
Fatalities
There has been three reported death which occurred in the last seven days. The Ministry of Health has confirmed the victim were aged 71, 81 and 97-years-old. The fatality means the total now stands at 7,827 since the start of the pandemic: 851 of these deaths have been recorded in Castellón; 3,022 in Alicante; and 3,974 in the province of Valencia.
Vaccinations
A total of 4,068,497 people have now received one dose of vaccine, and 4,024,892 people are fully immunised with two doses of Pfizer, Moderna or AstraZeneca, or the single-dose Janssen. In addition, 39,451 booster doses have been administered to 'at risk' people with pathologies and elderly in residential homes.
Active cases
According to the latest data, there are currently 2,224 1,836 active cases in the community (up from 1,836 on Monday), which represents 0.35% of the total positives, 0.07% higher than the start of the week)
Outbreaks
Since the last update, there have been no outbreaks with 10 or more associated cases.
