ARCHIVED - Carted off: American man drove stolen golf buggy 17km to Alicante Airport
The 22-year-old was caught trying to park the golf cart at the terminal of Alicante-Elche Airport
Security guards at Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport could hardly believe their eyes when they spotted a young man trying to park what appeared to be a golf buggy in the terminal’s car park.
They quickly informed the authorities since this kind of small electric vehicle is under no circumstances allowed to be driven outside of the golf course.
When the National Police arrived at the airport on Wednesday morning, January 4, they saw for themselves that a young man was indeed attempting to park a “buggy” on the second floor and identified its driver as a 22-year-old American.
On questioning the man about where the cart came from, “he used incongruous and meaningless words,” and the officers seized the electric vehicle and detained the driver until they could get to the bottom of the matter.
After several enquiries, it was discovered that the golf buggy belonged to a golf course in the town of Bacarot which, moments before, had been stolen by a man who had been thrown out by staff.
Incredibly, the young American drove the cart around 17 kilometres from the golf course to the airport along a very busy secondary road and a national dual carriageway. Based on this, the driver was formally arrested and now faces a crime against road safety and one for theft of the golf cart.
