Cartagena neighbourhoods set for smart sensors tracking air, noise and movement
€130,258 scheme will gather live data across the city’s northern districts and feed it into a new digital twin
Residents in northern Cartagena could soon have a clearer picture of the air they breathe, the noise around them, the weather and how people move through their streets. The Ayuntamiento de Cartagena is putting a €130,258 contract out to tender for a new network of smart sensors. The equipment will collect information in real time and feed it into the municipal Smart City platform, the council’s GIS system and the developing digital twin of the area.
The scheme covers Los Barreros, Vereda de San Félix, Barrio Peral, Barriada Cuatro Santos, Ciudad Jardín, San Antón and Urbanización Mediterráneo, along with the connections linking these districts to the rest of the municipality.
Around 15 main devices are planned. These include five air-quality sensors, five weather stations and five pedestrian-counting systems. They will mainly be installed on street-lighting columns and will include power supplies, wireless communications and connectivity during the first year.
The air monitors will measure nitrogen dioxide, nitrogen monoxide, sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide and ozone, together with PM1, PM2.5 and PM10 particles. The network will also record noise levels, temperature, humidity, wind, rainfall and solar radiation.
The noise monitoring should help show where sound levels are highest, while the pedestrian sensors will count people using the area and help identify the routes they take. The Ayuntamiento says the information will support more sustainable urban mobility, improve walking routes and help with the planning of public services.
The data will be managed through Cartagena’s FIWARE-based Smart City platform. Officials will be able to monitor readings live, create alerts and follow changes through dashboards, graphs and maps.
The information will also be added to the municipal GIS and the digital model created through the BeatTheHeat project. The aim is to keep developing a digital twin of Cartagena’s northern neighbourhoods, giving the Ayuntamiento a virtual representation of the area for future planning.
The project forms part of the RE-CREA Integrated Action Plan, backed by the European Regional Development Fund. The wider plan has a financial allocation of €8.87 million and aims to support urban, social and digital improvements.
The budget includes €38,565 for environmental sensors, €7,915 for pedestrian-flow systems, €13,230 for integration and development, and €30,000 for adding the information to the GIS and digital twin.
The contract may be co-funded by FEDER at 60% and will take six months to complete once formally awarded. Companies have until 11.59pm on October 15 to submit offers. The financial proposals are due to be opened, unless the timetable changes, on October 21.
The project builds on Cartagena’s first urban digital twin, announced in 2025. Mayor Noelia Arroyo previously said the aim was to use real-time data to manage services more efficiently.Images: Alexandra Holmes/Pexels and Ayuntamiento de Cartagena
