Car dangles off Orihuela Costa bridge over the busy AP-7 motorway
The vehicle ploughed through the guardrail on the Lomas de Cabo Roig bridge
An incredible accident has occurred in the Lomas de Cabo Roig area of Orihuela Costa, with a car tottering precariously over the bridge linking this inland district with the coast. Firefighters have been working tirelessly to secure the vehicle to prevent it from tumbling down onto the AP-7 motorway below.
Dozens of locals have taken to social media to express their exasperation, claiming that it was just a matter of time before an incident of this sort occurred. Activist groups, including the well-known La Asociación de Vecinos Cabo Roig y Lomas (Cabo Roig and Lomas Residents' Association, AVCRL) have long been campaigning for a pedestrian walkway over this narrow and extremely busy stretch of road.
The accident occurred at 9.44am on Monday September 23 and it appears that the car careened across the two-way road before becoming impaled in the low guardrail. It was mere inches from smashing through and plummeting onto the motorway far below.
Firefighters from Torrevieja arrived at the scene on the San Miguel road and while no injuries have been reported, they spent hours on the tricky task of first securing the car before ultimately removing it.
The existing bridge over the AP-7 is the only road connecting Lomas de Cabo Roig, a bustling residential area popular with British expats, and several other communities like La Cuerda and Lomas de Golf, with the services of the wider Orihuela Costa.
Just a stone’s throw away is Cabo Roig strip, which is home to the area’s most frequented beaches, the medical centre, pharmacies and supermarkets.
The current Comunidad Valenciana government team of PP and Vox has marked a pedestrian overpass as a priority, including it in the new budgets to the tune of 1.3 million euros.
However, Lomas de Cabo Roig has faced numerous disappointments on this score. Back in 2022, the City Council said it would go to court to claim back 1.2 million to build the bridge. This was the amount initially budgeted when Lomas was first being built up, but the company responsible for the job breached the contract.
