ARCHIVED - Callosa de Segura steps up security at popular recreational area following spate of robberies
Eight security cameras have been installed at Cueva Ahumada in the Vega Baja town in Alicante province
Callosa de Segura Town Council has installed eight 24-hour CCTV cameras at all access points to the popular recreational area of Cueva Ahumada to step up security following a spate of robberies.
La Cueva Ahumada in Sierra de Callosa is part of La Pilarica-Sierra de Callosa, listed as a Paraje Natural Municipal (municipal natural landscape) and is a major attraction for hikers and nature lovers.
But in recent months, there have been a number of thefts, robberies and car crime in the area.
Callosa Mayor, Manuel Martínez, explained: "We have closed circuit cameras which record 24-hours, seven-days a week in order to provide greater security in the area of the Cueva Ahumada. In recent months there have been a number of complaints about thefts in this area, and although the Local Police have increase patrols and arrested several people we wanted to increase security further."
He added that the local authority hopes the cameras will offer "reassurance to the public" and "prevent thefts and petty crime".
