ARCHIVED - Call for calm amongst Alicante shoppers amid nationwide transport strike
The Valencian Association of Consumers assures there are no serious supply shortages in Alicante province
As the national transport sector strike enters its eighth day and energy and fuel prices continue to rise, the knock-on effect is being felt across the country with shelves in several supermarkets stripped bare.
Despite images of empty aisles at stores in Spain flooding social media, the Spanish government has played down the level of shortages somewhat, and insisted the shortages are a "hoax" and implored consumers to shop responsibly.
And now the Valencian Association of Consumers (AVACU) has also made a "call for calm", and is urging shoppers in Alicante province "not to panic-buy".
The association wanted to see exactly how the transport workers' and hauliers' strike is affecting the supply of certain products in shops in Alicante, Valencia and Castellón – the three provinces in Valencia region – and after visiting different establishments, has "verified the problems that this situation may be generating for consumers".

AVACU confirmed that in most of the supermarkets visited, there are indeed fewer products on the shelves, such as meat, fish, dairy products, pasta, pulses and fresh produce.
"Even so, we cannot speak of a shortage as such, as although there is a lack of certain products similar products from other brands are still readily available," AVACU points out.
In addition, some supermarkets have restricted the quantity of certain products each shopper can purchase in one day, in particular milk and oil, with a maximum number of litres per person - a limitation that is supported by AVACU and Central Government "to protect the interests of consumers and thus prevent hoarding by third parties".
"We are calling for calm and insist that the supply of products is assured. Although there may be a lack of some products in very specific cases, we can find similar substitutes. For this reason, it is important that citizens make responsible purchases and we once again ask transport companies to reflect, as it is the families who are directly responsible for the damage and consequences of their stoppages," added AVACU.
