Cabo Roig rejoins the Mediterranean Trail as cliff walk reopens
The famous Orihuela Costa coastal path was blocked off by homeowners for years

Hikers tackling the famous Mediterranean Trail through Orihuela Costa can finally ditch a frustrating detour that's been forcing them inland for the past few years. The cliff walk section running through the Bellavista 1 residential area in Cabo Roig has just been properly incorporated into the GR 92 trail after being blocked off since 2021.
The short stretch of pedestrian path had been closed off by homeowners, leaving walkers with no choice but to take a nearly kilometre-long detour away from the sea. This summer, Orihuela City Council finally got the area reopened through an expropriation process, and the promenade is now back in public hands where it belongs.
The Consortium for the Economic Development of Vega Baja, known as Convega, has just finished sorting out all the signage for the newly accessible section. The work involved stripping out fifteen old red and white trail markers along a 900-metre stretch and putting up more than a dozen new regulatory signs over a 265-metre sector.
The new route covers about 60 linear metres right next to the sea, running between the car park on Calle Levante in Cabo Roig and the public calisthenics park in the Aguamarina development.
All the new markings meet the official standards set by the Federation of Mountain Sports and Climbing of the Valencian Community, which means the trail maintains its proper accreditation.
More importantly for anyone actually walking it, the signs make sure you can follow the natural coastal path without getting lost or wasting ten minutes heading in the wrong direction.
Rosa Fernández, director of Convega, described the change as a real win for hikers."The recovery of this section of the GR 92 represents a substantial improvement for hikers, who can now enjoy a more fluid and continuous route along the Mediterranean without detours or interruptions," she said this week.
Getting this section back means the trail now flows the way it was always meant to, keeping walkers right alongside the Mediterranean instead of sending them on an unnecessary inland loop.
The GR 92, often called the "Mediterranean Trail", traces the entire coastline of the Vega Baja del Segura region. Two stages of the trail pass through Guardamar del Segura, Torrevieja, Orihuela and Pilar de la Horadada, and these are actually the only officially approved sections in the whole of the Valencian Community.
Together, they cover more than 49 kilometres and take in thirty points of interest, giving hikers access to endless beaches, small cliffs, crystal clear waters, natural spaces and plenty of historical and cultural sites along the way.
