Brits and Irish among 7 arrested for drug trafficking on the Costa Blanca
A cannabis club in Denia, Alicante was busted for hiding narcotics in food
A Briton and an Irishman are among several arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking and belonging to a criminal gang after a cannabis club was raided in the Costa Blanca town of Denia. Investigating officers have described the premises as a veritable “supermarket” for narcotics.
The investigation began in March when police became aware that the cannabis club, located in the middle of the town, was being used as a cover for selling illicit drugs to members of the public, including marijuana and hashish.
An undercover surveillance operation began, and it soon became clear that the club was catering to far more customers than its 86 registered members. Moreover, the staff were selling drugs that clients removed from the premises, which is illegal.
Officers managed to identify the alleged ringleaders, a 48-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman, of Irish and Dutch nationality, respectively. The couple was listed as president and secretary of the cannabis association.
Two different searches of the premises revealed copious amounts of marijuana in different forms: buds, cigarettes and even hidden in different food products, as well as hashish and other narcotics paraphernalia. In all, police found 3,984 grams of marijuana and 1,106 grams of hashish.
In order to disguise the clandestine operation, the owners had hidden the drugs throughout the premises – under bundles of clothes, in rubbish bins – all packaged and ready to sell.
Furthermore, a considerably larger quantity of narcotic substance was found in the home of the main suspect.
After the two gang leaders were arrested, five other people, including British and Spanish citizens, were apprehended.
Last week, in nearby Torrevieja, a British expat was arrested following another raid of a cannabis club in the city centre.
