British yacht stranded on beach in Spain
The Nordic Lily ship ran aground on the beach as it headed for the Valencia Yacht Club
A 20-metre luxury yacht flying a British flag ran aground right off the beach of Pinedo in Valencia in front of hundreds of stunned bathers on Monday June 5. And there the ‘Nordic Lily’ remained for more than 24 hours as a major leak on the deck prevented the Maritime Captaincy from towing it ashore.
Instead, a specialist team was sent on board to carry out temporary repairs that would allow the ship to float to safety. The ship was reportedly on its way to the Valencia Yacht Club when the accident occurred.
Shortly after the yacht became stranded, the captain had to be evacuated to the La Fe Hospital in Valencia by the Helimer 203 Maritime Rescue helicopter when he fell ill. Two other crew members remained on board.
The authorities have now launched an investigation to determine how exactly the ship was damaged, and a disciplinary file will be opened against the captain if any negligence is detected.
