ARCHIVED - British holidaymakers make steady comeback in Benidorm
Tourists from the UK account for 18.5% of all visitors to the Marina Baixa resort, Alicante province, in September
The international market is making a steady comeback in Benidorm, with 18.5% of tourists holidaying in the resort this month British, figures that have not been seen since before the pandemic, according to Valencia’s Hotel and Tourist Business Association (Hosbec).
Destinations across the region have seen average occupancy levels of around 70% in September, with more and more hotels reopening as travel restrictions are eased.
But whilst the international market is “reacting every week and growing steadily”, Benidorm in particular is “awaiting the opening of the United Kingdom”, and an extra 3,000 hotel beds have been made available in the last fortnight.
“However, we are still far from what the normal data would be at this time of year. Without a pandemic, hotel occupancy would currently be exceeding 90% as September had become the second month of preference for tourists,” explained Hosbec president, Toni Mayor.
However, he remains confident that British tourism will “bring back the joy to Benidorm” following the uncertainty of the pandemic and Brexit.
“Week by week it is going up, growing, and the British market already accounts for 18.5% of the market, a figure which will soon approach 2019 levels,” said Mayor.
Hosbec’s optimism is based on the fact the 14-day cumulative incidence rate has fallen below 50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, and that almost 90% of over 12s are now vaccinated.
“The whole sector has its sights set on a October 4, when the UK will remove the need for a PCR for those who are fully vaccinated. The tour operators are already warming up engines for this new stage that opens up the main international market on the Costa Blanca,” said Mayor.
