ARCHIVED - Brit arrested after Irish expat, 68, is stabbed to death at Benidorm Fancy Dress Party
The victim reportedly lived with the detainee at a property in the Costa Blanca resort's Rincon de Loix area
A 68-year-old Irishman was stabbed to death in Benidorm on Thursday November 17 as almost 45,000 Brits and other tourists descended on the Costa Blanca resort for the 25th annual Benidorm Fancy Dress Party.
The fatal stabbing happened at around 10.30am and a British man, aged 62, has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
The two men lived together at a property in the Rincon de Loix area where the monster costume party took place, and it's believed a violent row erupted at the house prior to the fatal stabbing. Paramedics managed to revive the deceased before he was rushed to hospital, but he later died.
The detainee, who suffered less serious stab wounds, is being treated at Villajoyosa's Marina Baixa Hospital and is expected to be taken to a police station for questioning when he's well enough.
According to the National Police, "an emergency call was received at around 10.30am reporting two men bleeding from stab injuries at a house in Benidorm".
"Officers found a British 62-year-old who had suffered stab wounds outside the property when they arrived and another man, a 68-year-old Irish man, on an upper floor of the property in a very serious condition with multiple stab wounds to his chest, abdomen, head and left leg.
"Both men were transferred to Villajoyosa Hospital (the older man later died) and an investigation launched into the incident."
Benidorm Town Hall reinforced security on Thurday with an additional 50 local and national police officers in uniform and in plain clothes on the ground, and by air, with drones or from the rooftops of some buildings, to try to ensure the festival went without incident.
