ARCHIVED - Bright but bitterly cold and frosty weekend ahead: Alicante weather Jan 26-29
While it will remain quite sunny across much of Alicante province, experts predict worse weather is to come

The mercury has tumbled significantly over the last couple of weeks in Alicante province, plunging the region into colder, wintry conditions that have seen temperatures drop to well below zero inland and bringing with it the first snowfall of 2023.
And conditions are unlikely to improve, in fact, experts predict worse weather to come thanks to a tilting cold depression left behind by storm Hannelore.
Meteorologist Lluís Francés explained: "The Azorian anticyclone scales back towards higher latitudes, stretching as far as the British Isles, which, together with the central Mediterranean trough, allows cold to continue to enter at high altitude from a continental polar component.
"This, together with the humid flows that we expect from Thursday and Friday onwards, will ensure the cold and the arrival of more clouds to the east of the peninsula over the weekend".
According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), the outlook for Thursday January 26 is, as expected, colder temperatures with light frost in the early hours of the morning in urban areas. Gusts of 40 km/h will ease and give way to clearer skies but with more frost and maximum temperatures are unlikely to top 14ºC. Overnight, sub-zero temperatures are expected inland where a northerly wind will make things feel even colder.

Alicante: 4ºC to 14ºC
Denia: 6ºC to 12ºC
Elche: 3ºC to 14ºC
Orihuela: 3ºC to 13ºC
Clear morning skies will give way to cloud as the day progresses on Friday January 27, and frost is forecast across the board with a dip in nighttime temperatures. Occasional showers are not ruled out in coastal areas and snow levels will rise to 700-800 metres. A light to moderate variable wind will be predominantly northerly on the coast and westerly inland.

Denia: 6ºC to 12ºC
Elche: 1ºC to 14ºC
Orihuela: 1ºC to 13ºC
Saturday January 28 will get off to a partly cloudy or clear start, increasing to cloudy intervals in the afternoon, with occasional showers on the south coast and weak frosts inland. Moderate north-westerly winds will feel occasionally strong in pre-coastal areas; in the rest, light variable wind, predominantly westerly in the morning in general and easterly on the coast in the afternoon.

Denia: 4ºC to 12ºC

Cloudy intervals are forecast on Sunday January 29, and Aemet has not ruled out scattered showers in southern coastal areas, which will tend to diminish during the afternoon. Morning fog banks are likely in inland areas, along with frost. Coastal areas can expect light north and northeast winds, with moderate intervals; inland, light variable wind, with light to moderate northwesterly gusts in the north.
