President Sanchez brings 2023 Spanish general election forward by six months
The President, Pedro Sánchez, has made the announcement following a rotund defeat in the regional and municipal elections this weekend
The president of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, has announced that the general elections slated to be held in Spain in December will now be brought forward to July 23 following the poor election results achieved by his governing Socialist party, the PSOE.
President Sánchez made the unexpected announcement this morning, Monday May 29 at 11am, after his embarrassing electoral showing this weekend.
“The formal call for the elections will be published tomorrow in the BOE, the elections will be held on Sunday July 23,” he said.
The president recognised that the “feeling” transmitted by the regional electoral results “goes beyond” the regional level, and as such he will dissolve the government and hold fresh elections at the earliest possible time allowed legally.
He said he believes that the best thing is for Spaniards to “take the floor” and decide earlier than expected.
Unlike the regional and municipal elections, expats from EU member states and countries with special agreements who are resident in Spain cannot vote in Spanish general elections.
