ARCHIVED - BP opens its first fast-charging station for electric vehicles in Spain on the Costa Blanca
The UK company plans to set up another 12 stations in Spain before the end of the year

British Petrol (BP) has opened its first fast-charging station for electric vehicles in Spain in Torrevieja, Alicante province, and is set to open a further 12 across the country before the end of the year.
The firm, which only two months ago announced plans to sell the leases of its portfolio of almost 750 filling stations in Spain, already has more than 9,000 charging points on its BP pulse network, a new brand "dedicated to the development and operation of electric charging infrastructure", according to a company statement.
Spain's first BP fast-charging unit, which is already operational, is located next to the AP-7 road at the La Coronelita service station in Torrevieja. Powered by 100% renewable electricity, it can provide between 150kW and 300kW of charging power.
The company's objective is to "consolidate its leading position in the Iberian Peninsula by providing fast charging solutions for both passenger cars and fleets of heavy vehicles and vans", reaching 5,000 charging points by 2025 and 11,000 by 2030.
Compatible with vehicles equipped with a CCS or CHAdeMO charging system, the station can provide a range of up to 160 kilometres in just 10 minutes, depending on the electric vehicle model.
"In order to transform the current mobility model and reach the goal of zero net emissions by 2050 or sooner, it is necessary to promote the rapid expansion of electric vehicles and more sustainable fuels," explained BP Spain President Andrés Guevara.
"Milestones such as the inauguration of the first BP pulse fast charging station in Torrevieja increasingly consolidate the role of our service station network as a point of electric energy supply and allow us to continue progressing towards the goal of reaching 100,000 charging points worldwide by 2030," he added.
Ildefonso Boto, manager of electric mobility for Southern Europe, pointed out that "increasing the availability of fast charging service is a necessary condition for moving towards the mobility of the future."
In April, BP announced, together with Volkswagen Group, a strategic alliance to boost the deployment of fast charging infrastructure in Europe and the first unit resulting from this agreement is already operational and open to the public in Düsseldorf, Germany.
As such, the company's growing charging network will be integrated into the dashboards of Volkswagen, Skoda and Seat/Cupra vehicles "so that drivers can easily find the nearest charger".
The aim of the collaboration is to create up to 8,000 new charging points in Germany, the UK and other European countries by the end of 2024.
And last July, BP also announced an agreement with Iberdrola to contribute to the decarbonisation of transport and industry. Both companies plan to install a network of fast and ultra-fast public charging points in high-demand locations in Spain and Portugal, "significantly expanding access to charging for cars and fleets of heavy vehicles and vans, thus accelerating electric mobility".
