ARCHIVED - Bogus police officer robs 1,000 euros from Ukrainian refugee in Alicante
The fake officer accused the refugee of selling cocaine when he targeted her in the centre of Alicante
A fake police officer accosted a terrified Ukrainian refugee in Alicante city and stole 1,000 euros from her. The bogus cop approached the unsuspecting woman while she was taking photos close to the provincial council buildings last week, and in a mixture of English and Spanish, told her she was suspected of being a drug trafficker.
The stunned refugee handed over her backpack to the bogus officer for a search, but when he found nothing of value, he demanded that she open the bum-bag tied around her waist. The suspect thumbed through the notes while pretending to make a phone call to his ‘superiors,’ and made arrangements to meet the Ukrainian woman at the same spot the following day to examine her identity papers.

It was only after she had arrived home that the refugee realised that her 1,000 euros in cash had been swiped.
The Ukrainian woman went to the National Police to report the crime and surveillance footage revealed that the suspect was known to the officers from previous offences.
The 46-year-old Romanian man attempted to evade arrest but was eventually captured, and officials are investigating whether he might have been involved in similar scams involving vulnerable individuals.
