ARCHIVED - Valencia government makes renewed appeal for humanitarian aid for Ukraine
Three collection points on the Costa Blanca, including one in Alicante, have been reactivated
As the conflict rages on in Ukraine following Russia's invasion on February 24, the urgent need for vital supplies continues. And just weeks after the Valencia Government asked that "no more donations are collected for the moment" at three major logistic centres, the collection points have been reactivated.
The Generalitat has this week launched a new appeal to companies and town councils for the collection of humanitarian aid to alleviate the situation in the besiged Ukraine, which will be channelled through the centres in Alicante, Valenica and Castellón.
The Director General for the Coordination of Social Dialogue, Zulima Pérez, explained that "non-perishable foodstuffs, hygiene and sanitary materials are needed, with the exception of medicines". She added that "as we have a surplus of clothes, these are not necessary either at the moment".
Logistics collection centres are located in the Ciudad de la Luz in Alicante, Feria Valencia and the Cocherón Provincial in Castellón. Anybody who wishes to make a donation should contact their local town councils which will transport the items, whilst companies can contact the logistics centres directly.
"Individuals and companies in the Valencia region have already gone out of their way to help make it possible for humanitarian material to reach those who need it most, and we are now renewing the appeal for aid," added Pérez.
So far, the Generalitat has collected more than 1,000 tonnes of much-needed supplies, and a large part of it has already been sent to Ukraine through different channels.
The remainder has been distributed amongst Ukrainian refugees who have "who have arrived in the region with little or no luggage".
