Body count rises as 6th corpse is reeled in by fishermen off the coat of Denia
Half a dozen decomposed bodies, believed to migrants, have been recovered in Denia waters on the Costa Blanca since the end of March
Fishermen in Denia have reeled in another lifeless body, the sixth found floating in these waters since March 24, this time around seven nautical miles from the coast.
The corpse was caught in a trawler net in an advanced state of decomposition at around 4.30pm on Friday June 2, just three days after crew aboard the 'Vidal' boat dragged in a male's corpse six miles from the shore.
On April 12, two bodies - also severely decomposed - were pulled aboard a fishing boat close to the coast. According to documents they were carrying, both men were of Nigerian nationality.
Less than three weeks earlier, two bodies were caught in nets in high seas about five miles from Denia shoreline.
All of the deceased are believed to have been migrants attempting to reach Spain in small vessels known as pateras. An investigation is underway by the Judicial Police, who are working on the assumption a boat carrying the deceased capsized either due to a storm at sea or substandard conditions of the vessel.
Tragically, thousands of migrants die each year attempting the perilous crossing from northern Africa to southern Europe in search of refuge and a better life.
